Research and analysis from FootyCabin’s editorial team, combining football data with transparent methodology and source-based reporting.
FootyCabin estimates a €2,417 gap between the highest and lowest four-match away travel budgets in the 2026/27 Champions League. The analysis covers 144 journeys, with match tickets excluded.
A Champions League draw decides far more than who a team will face. For supporters determined to follow their club around Europe, it also shapes how far they must travel, which connections they can take and how much they may need to spend on a bed for the night.
New research by FootyCabin puts the estimated cost of attending all four of Bodø/Glimt's league-phase away matches at €3,782.04. For Real Madrid, the lowest total among the 36 clubs, the equivalent four-trip budget is €1,364.98. The difference is €2,417.06, before a supporter has paid for a single match ticket.
The study covers all 36 clubs and 144 away journeys in the 2026/27 league phase. It combines researched flight, rail and coach options, hotels, a standard meal allowance and material connecting transfers. The figures are modelled travel budgets, not actual expenditure by fans and not fares guaranteed to be available today.
The research draws primarily on flight prices sourced through Skyscanner and accommodation prices from Booking.com, supplemented by airline and transport operator data where needed. Prices were collected mainly on 11–12 October 2026 and form the basis of FootyCabin's estimated travel budgets.
A note on the estimates: Most prices were researched on 11-12 October 2026. For the 18 away journeys on 13-14 October, researched just one to three days before kick-off, we made an explicit late-booking adjustment. September fixtures already played were estimated using separate retrospective proxies. Later fixtures generally retain prices observed during the research period. This is not a claim that every journey was priced at exactly 30 days before travel. The complete figures, sources and adjustments are explained below.
Key findings from the 144 away journeys
- Bodø/Glimt have the highest estimated four-trip cost at €3,782.04, equivalent to approximately €946 per away match.
- Real Madrid have the lowest at €1,364.98, roughly €341 per trip.
- The difference is €2,417.06, or about 2.8 times as much for Bodø/Glimt as for Real Madrid under the model's assumptions.
- Sabah (€3,488.59) and Borussia Dortmund (€3,482.98) have the next-highest totals. Their difference is too small to treat as a definitive ranking of real-world spending.
- Dortmund's visit to Bodø/Glimt has the highest individual trip estimate, €1,657.27. Its accommodation estimate is based on limited hotel evidence.
- Twenty of 144 journeys have a LIMITED quality flag in the source research. All are included, with their limitations disclosed rather than hidden.

| 35 | Sabah | €3,488.59 | €872.15 |
| 36 | Bodø/Glimt | €3,782.04 | €945.51 |
For some clubs the total is shaped by a single demanding journey. For others, repeated connections and comparatively expensive destinations add up across the schedule. The ranking is not a judgement on which supporters are most dedicated, and it does not imply that every fan will travel from the same airport, stay in a hotel or take the same route.
Why Bodø/Glimt face the highest estimated away travel costs
Bodø/Glimt are at the top of the cost ranking for a reason that goes beyond one isolated expensive ticket. Three of their four trips exceed €900 in the model.
| Away fixture | Match date | Estimated trip cost |
|---|---|---|
| Bayern München | 2026-09-10 | €662.84 |
| Napoli | 2026-10-20 | €1,076.90 |
| Lens | 2026-12-09 | €1,123.20 |
| Club Brugge | 2027-01-27 | €919.10 |
Four-trip total: €3,782.04.
Lens is the most expensive of their destinations at €1,123.20, followed by Napoli at €1,076.90. Moving between northern Norway and continental European cities can mean less flexibility over flights and more reliance on connections than supporters travelling out of major international hubs.
It is important not to overstate the certainty of that explanation. The dataset records particular itineraries and hotel options, not every possible route or accommodation choice. Two Bodø/Glimt journeys were marked LIMITED in the research because their underlying quotes were less robust than those for other trips.
Even so, Bodø/Glimt retained the highest combined total in all four of our tested scenarios for the special October hotel adjustment. That supports the broad result within the tested assumptions, though it does not put a statistical confidence interval around the €3,782 figure.
Why Real Madrid have the cheapest away travel schedule
At the opposite end, Real Madrid's four-trip total is €1,364.98, about €2,417 below Bodø/Glimt's.
| Away fixture | Match date | Estimated trip cost |
|---|---|---|
| Roma | 2026-10-14 | €452.47 |
| AEK Athens | 2026-11-04 | €456.61 |
| Arsenal | 2026-12-09 | €240.05 |
| Shakhtar Donetsk | 2027-01-27 | €215.85 |
Four-trip total: €1,364.98.
The Arsenal and Shakhtar Donetsk fixtures contribute comparatively small budgets: €240.05 and €215.85 respectively. For the Shakhtar fixture, the model uses the club's designated European home venue, not a flight into Donetsk. Match location matters just as much as the identity of the nominal home team.
Madrid also benefits from being a major transport hub with a broad range of international connections. That does not mean every Real Madrid fan could make those journeys for €341.25 each. Supporters booking on different days, flying from elsewhere in Spain or staying longer could pay more; some who share rooms or use alternative transport could pay less.
The most expensive individual Champions League away trips
The largest single-journey estimate in the 144-trip study is Borussia Dortmund travelling to Bodø/Glimt on 14 October, at €1,657.27. Lille's journey to Bodø on 3 November is close behind at €1,628.26, followed by PSV's trip to RB Leipzig on 13 October at €1,437.28.
The Dortmund figure deserves special scrutiny. The research found only one hotel that met the selection criteria at an observable price for the relevant two-night stay in Bodø. That hotel's observed price was €746.33 for two nights, researched exceptionally close to kick-off. The article's scenario reduces that hotel component to €597.06. The adjusted long-distance travel component is €766.13. Together with the meal allowance and qualifying connecting transport, the model produces the €1,657.27 trip total.
That is not a claim that the hotel would definitely have been 20% cheaper a month earlier. It is an explicit modelling choice intended to avoid treating an exceptionally late hotel quote as equivalent to quotes gathered for matches much further away.
Some of the most expensive journeys involve Bodø in either direction. The figures illustrate how awkward travel connections and local accommodation availability can make following a club more difficult, particularly when the fixture falls at a demanding time. But the evidence cannot determine exactly how much of any one trip's cost is caused by the match itself.
Why travel prices for 13-14 October were adjusted
This is the most important qualification in the study.
Prices were collected mainly on 11-12 October 2026. For a supporter travelling to a match on 13 or 14 October, that meant researching flights and accommodation only about one to three days beforehand. In contrast, other fixtures were still weeks or months away.
Using those late quotations without adjustment could unfairly inflate the apparent burden on clubs playing that week. We therefore treated the 18 journeys associated with 13-14 October differently from later fixtures.
For those 18 journeys only:
- Flights and long-distance transport use the original model's estimated price at an approximately 30-day booking horizon, rather than the unadjusted last-minute quotation.
- Hotels use 80% of the observed accommodation price, equivalent to a modelled 20% reduction.
- Meals and qualifying inter-city transfers retain their existing amounts.
- The resulting components are added together to produce the revised trip estimate.
The 20% hotel reduction is an assumption, not a recorded historical discount. We compared hotel prices for different Champions League match dates, sometimes at the same property. Those comparisons suggested that close-in dates can be more expensive, but they do not tell us what an identical room for an identical match would have cost 30 days earlier. Weekday, seasonality, room availability, booking terms and demand around a particular match may also explain differences.
We tested scenarios with 0%, 10%, 20% and 30% hotel reductions for the 13-14 October fixtures. Bodø/Glimt remained the highest-cost club and Real Madrid the lowest in those four scenarios. Other places in the table, including the near-tie between Sabah and Dortmund, are more sensitive to assumptions. These tests do not capture every source of pricing uncertainty.
All 18 journeys affected by the 13-14 October adjustment
The adjusted hotel column is after the 20% reduction. The observed transport and hotel columns show the late quotations recorded in the methodology workbook, so readers can see both. All amounts are in euros. The total also includes the model's meal allowance and material ground transfers.

The hotel step can be checked directly: each adjusted hotel figure is 80% of the observed quotation. The transport step cannot be fully reproduced from these files. The adjusted transport figures come from the original model's 30-day normalisation, and the factor applied to each observed quotation is not recorded in the published dataset or workbook. Those totals are therefore correct model outputs, but not independently reproducible.
We have not applied the same adjustment to fixtures on 20 October or later. Their quotations are retained at the booking horizons that existed during the research. This avoids introducing further hypothetical price changes, but it also means the study is not a uniform 30-day advance-booking comparison.
How we calculated the cost of following every club
For each fixture we priced a practical return journey for one adult supporter, normally including long-distance transport, accommodation where required, food and material transfers needed to complete the route. We examined 144 separate journeys, four for each club, based on the official 2026/27 Champions League league-phase fixture list.
The model aims to compare reasonably practical ways of making the trips, rather than the very lowest imaginable fare irrespective of journey length or complexity.
Flights and long-distance transport
Flight research used Skyscanner as a principal search source, supplemented by airline websites and other journey information when needed. We considered practical economy return itineraries and generally excluded problematic connections such as explicitly unsupported self-transfers, airport changes during layovers and unrealistic overnight journeys. Where trains or coaches were more practical than a flight, we used those instead.
For the near-term October fixtures, the estimated earlier-booking long-distance fare comes from the original travel normalisation model. This is an extrapolation using comparative booking-horizon information, not a record of the exact fare that existed 30 days before kick-off.
Accommodation costs
Hotels were researched primarily through Booking.com, using private rooms for one adult in practical locations, generally in the mid-range or around three-star standard. Dormitories, luxury properties and special member-only rates were excluded. Where three suitable quotes were available, the middle value was selected; where two were available, their average was used. When only one usable option could be found, the source was flagged as having less robust coverage.
Accommodation costs depend on the number of nights in the particular itinerary. This means that comparisons between trips should not be interpreted as equivalent nightly hotel prices. The 20% hotel reduction applies only to the specified October matches, not retrospectively to every hotel in the study.
Food and ground transfers
Food is a standardised allowance, not an observed record of what supporters ate. The model applies a 65% food share to the relevant country's Eurostat daily subsistence benchmark for each modelled overnight stay. The purpose is consistency across countries, not to suggest that every fan will spend the same amount in restaurants.
Significant airport-to-city, inter-city rail, coach and border transfers are included where needed to complete a realistic route. Routine local metro and bus journeys and stadium travel are not separately added.
How September's completed matches were estimated
The first match round took place on 8-10 September 2026, before the research was carried out. Those 18 journeys cannot be represented by live searches conducted in October. Instead, the model uses comparable future travel-date proxies, principally in November at roughly 30 days' booking lead time.
These are retrospective estimates, not recorded prices from September. Their basis is identified in the downloadable trip-by-trip data.
Special cases, proxies and data limitations
Two Napoli fixtures, away to Porto and Manchester City, use route-level proxies because suitable exact-date return journeys could not be confirmed under the study's travel criteria. These are explicitly marked LIMITED.
For Shakhtar Donetsk supporters travelling away, the model assumes a starting base in Lviv, with cross-border ground travel where relevant, rather than pretending regular commercial flights depart from Donetsk. For clubs visiting Shakhtar, the model instead uses the designated venue of that particular fixture.
In total, 124 journeys are marked GOOD and 20 LIMITED. These are research-quality labels, not statistical confidence intervals. They identify cases where source coverage, route assumptions or other limitations warrant extra caution.
Finally, supporter choices vary widely: shared hotel rooms, stays with friends, loyalty points, different airports, overnight buses or extra sightseeing days all change the budget. Fares can also move at any time. The figures should not be treated as receipts, guaranteed offers or proof of what a specific fan would have paid.
Research data & sources
To make the study reviewable, FootyCabin provides a companion 144-trip research dataset containing the travelling club, opponent, fixture date, long-distance transport, accommodation, meal allowance, significant transfers, combined estimate, source references where retained, observation dates, quality flags and the treatment applied to each journey.
The methodology and scenarios workbook documents the calculation assumptions, the selective October scenario and the alternative hotel adjustments. For the 18 October journeys it shows both the observed late quotations and the adjusted model inputs. It does not contain every original quote behind every trip. Where a source is a live search URL rather than an archived quotation, it does not independently prove an old price.
The study is an original FootyCabin analysis using research drawn principally from Skyscanner, Booking.com, relevant airlines and transport operators, and Eurostat subsistence benchmarks. Fixture opponents and dates are based on UEFA's published league-phase schedule.
What this ranking ultimately shows is not an exact bill waiting for every supporter. It is the scale of the travel challenge that can sit behind a European draw. Under the assumptions used here, the difference between the most and least expensive sets of away fixtures exceeds €2,400, before match tickets are considered.
Research conducted principally on 11-12 October 2026. All prices are in euros. Travel and hotel prices are dynamic. No figures represent guaranteed currently bookable offers.
