Barcelona tops Danish Google search interest among 20 major clubs as Premier League dominates top eight

FootyCabin analysed Google Trends data across three time periods and Denmark’s five regions to identify which major international clubs generate the strongest search interest — and where the biggest regional differences appear.

Barcelona finished first in every national time period examined, but the wider picture of Danish football interest is unmistakably English: six of the eight highest-ranked clubs over the past 12 months play in the Premier League.

An analysis of Google search interest in Denmark across 20 major international clubs places Barcelona at 100 on a comparative 12-month index. Liverpool follow at 78.5, ahead of Real Madrid on 75.5, Manchester United on 71.5 and Arsenal on 68.2.

Manchester City, Chelsea and Tottenham complete a top eight containing six English clubs. Paris Saint-Germain and Bayern Munich follow in ninth and tenth, while no Italian club makes the national top ten.

The ranking was constructed from Google Trends time-series data using overlapping clubs to put three separate comparison groups onto the same scale. The underlying 12-month exports show Barcelona consistently ahead of most of their principal rivals, while Liverpool and Arsenal appear identically in the first two comparison groups and provide the first calibration point.

Denmark’s 20-club search ranking

Index 100 = the highest relative search interest in that period. Scores have been rescaled across the three comparison groups; they are not absolute search volumes.

Barcelona’s lead is therefore not simply the product of one short surge. The club remains first over the full year, the latest three months and the latest month. Manchester United show the strongest recent performance among the chasing group, moving from fourth over 12 months to second over three months before sitting narrowly behind Liverpool over the latest month. The shorter-period results come from daily Trends data using the same calibration method.

Search interest should not be confused with supporter numbers. Google describes Trends as a sample of Google searches which is normalised for the selected time and location and then presented on a 0–100 scale. It therefore measures relative search attention, rather than season-ticket holders, television audiences or the size of a club’s Danish fan base.

North Denmark is the exception

The regional breakdown is more revealing than the national order.

Barcelona lead outright in the Capital Region, Region Zealand, Southern Denmark and Central Denmark across the 12-month period. North Denmark is different: Barcelona and Liverpool are level there in the original 12-month comparison, with Manchester United immediately behind.

The picture then changes over the shorter periods.

Over the three-month period, Manchester United score 19 in North Denmark in their original comparison group, against Barcelona’s 18 and Liverpool’s 17. During the latest month, United remain narrowly first on 18, with Barcelona and Liverpool both on 17.

The margins are small, and Google Trends uses sampled and rounded relative data, so the result is better described as United edging ahead in recent search interest than as evidence that North Denmark has definitively become a Manchester United stronghold.

Benfica provide the clearest example of event-driven interest

The most dramatic short-term movement belongs to Benfica.

Nationally, the Portuguese club move from 17th on the 12-month index to 11th over three months and ninth during the latest month. In Central Denmark, the change is much sharper: their bridge-adjusted regional index rises from roughly 12.7 over 12 months to 46.6 over three months and 79.7 over the latest month, with Barcelona set at 100.

There is a compelling piece of context.

Benfica faced AGF in the Europa League play-offs in August. Benfica won the first leg 3–1 in Lisbon on 20 August, before beating the Aarhus club 3–1 again in Denmark on 27 August to advance 6–2 on aggregate.

The Google Trends series lines up almost exactly with those fixtures. Benfica hit 100 in their comparison group on 20 August and 84 on 27 August. On most surrounding days, their score was far lower.

Google search behaviour alone cannot prove that the AGF matches caused every additional Benfica search. But the match dates and search peaks coincide closely enough to make the tie the clearest explanation supported by the available evidence.

It also illustrates the broader value — and limitation — of this type of data. Barcelona’s position at the top appears structurally resilient; short-term search interest further down the ranking can be transformed by a fixture, transfer, draw or other news event.

For clubs and competitions trying to understand attention across Denmark, that distinction matters. The national ranking reveals the brands with persistent reach. The regional and daily data show where football becomes local.

Methodology

This analysis examined Google search interest in Denmark for 20 selected major international football clubs, using Google Trends Web Search data collected on 12 September 2026. Three time periods were analysed: the previous 12 months, previous three months and previous month. Regional data was also collected for Denmark’s five administrative regions.

Where available, clubs were selected as Google Trends Topics rather than exact search terms. Topics group searches referring to the same entity across different languages and spelling variations, reducing problems caused by ambiguous club names.

Because Google Trends Explore cannot compare all 20 clubs simultaneously, the clubs were divided into three overlapping groups of eight. Group A contained Real Madrid, Barcelona, Manchester United, Liverpool, Arsenal, Chelsea, Paris Saint-Germain and Manchester City. Group B contained Liverpool, Arsenal, Bayern Munich, Inter Milan, Atlético Madrid, Borussia Dortmund, Tottenham Hotspur and Galatasaray. Group C contained Tottenham, Galatasaray, Juventus, AC Milan, Benfica, Ajax, Inter Miami and Al-Nassr.

Liverpool and Arsenal were included in both Groups A and B, while Tottenham and Galatasaray were included in both Groups B and C. These repeated clubs acted as anchors. For each time period, the relative values of the two shared clubs were used to calculate the adjustment required to put the separate Google Trends groups onto a common scale. Using two anchors rather than one also provided a consistency check against distortions caused by rounding or sampling.

After the three groups had been aligned, the results were rebased so that the club with the highest search interest in each period received an index score of 100, with every other club expressed relative to that leader.

Regional results were calculated separately using the same overlapping-group method for each Danish region. They should therefore be interpreted as relative search interest within each region, not as absolute search volumes between regions.

Google Trends data is sampled, normalised and rounded. A score of 100 represents the highest relative search interest in the comparison, not a specific number of searches. The results therefore measure Google search attention rather than supporter numbers or overall club popularity. Lower-volume clubs are also more susceptible to sampling variation and short-term events.

Finally, the study covers the 20 clubs selected for the analysis, not every football club. References to rankings such as “first” or “top eight” therefore refer specifically to the clubs included in this dataset.
